I've had a migraine headache for the last three days. Between my sinuses being swollen from allergies and the tension from the pain of my sinuses combined with working on technical issues, I've been miserable.
My assistant had the day off yesterday, but she called in to tell me she would be in late today. When she called, she heard the pain in my voice as I sat trying to plow through the work I needed to do. She asked if it was the same headache I had had three days ago and I told her it was. She chastised me and told me that I shouldn't be working, I should be taking some time off to take care of myself.
Well it seems that my assistant is smarter than I am. I took her advice and took the rest of the afternoon off. I arranged to have dinner with some friends and I sat and watched TV all afternoon with a nice glass of red wine. By the end of the evening with my friends, my headache was gone. Today I have been much more productive than I have been for the last three days, but I'm still feeling a bit fatigued. I've just been working too hard.
My solution? At 4:00pm today my assistant and I will be getting pedicures (my treat). Then this evening I'm having dinner with another friend. My goal for this weekend? I'm not touching my computer all weekend. A little downtime is in order in my life.
Those of us who work hard also need to remember that "play hard" is the other side of that equation. This weekend I'm playing really hard. Care to join me?
