Social Networking vs. Community

I just read a blog asking about social networking and it made me think.  A few years ago "social networking" meant going out to lunch with other agents or attending a party, networking event or class.  But today, its definition has been reduced to what online activities we do to connect with others.  That's all well and fine, but here's my question:

How much of today's online "social networking" is really driven by a sense of isolation and need for connection to fellow human beings?  Personally, I think we're starved as a culture for connection, healthy physical touch, and acceptance.

Your thoughts?

100% agree- I just posted yesterday about "faceless" sellers of listings I have. We are becoming a society lacking human contact and interaction. Sitting on the computer chatting, blogging, emailing- whatever doesnt replace real conversations in my opinion either. Glad to hear I am not the only one having issue with the impersonal aspect of the w.w.w.

Agree. I have customers who I only meet at closing and they are surprised that I show up for my loan closings! Face to face is so important to build up trust!

Totally right on. Yet as impersonal as the internet and blogging and commenting may seem, don't overlook the good points. We are connecting - albeit maybe not in the best way.
