Life Is Like a Box Of Chocolates...

Read The Directions...

I host a family-of-choice Thanksgiving for friends each year.  So I started my preparations for Thanksgiving Dinner last night.  I was making my famous paper bag apple pie and a pumpkin pie.  Well, I normally buy the pumpkin pie because I usually spend a ton of time making the apple pies because I've picked the apples myself and I'm making 8-10 pies.  But this year I didn't go apple picking and I only made one pie, so I thought I would make the pumpkin pie too.

When I went to the store, I bought the pumpkin pack.  I looked at the one-pie can and thought "that can't possibly be enough for the deep dish pie crust I'm using, I'll buy the two-pie can, and just deal with having a little leftover."  Now I know better than to make decisions like this when I'm a little stressed out from there being too many people in the store trying to get around me.  (If you're curious about the ways we make decisions, you really should listen to this program by Radio Lab about how choices are made.)  I never read the directions on the package.

So last night, I went to make the pie and realized that I didn't have any evaporated milk, which was required for the pie.  Sigh.  So now I'm off to purchase a pumpkin pie after all.  Looks like I'll be bringing two pumpkin pies to Christmas dinner.  Good thing there's going to be a big party...

The Moral of the Story - always read the directions.

Yes, you are right!  I read the directions, make the list and somehow when I get to the grocers, NO LIST!  I have been to the store everyday this week and I will probably be stopping by for something on the way home today.  It is okay though, because I may run into someone I haven't seen in a long time.  Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy those pumpkin pies!
